The Sudan High School Band Handbook

General Rules

• Be respectful and courteous at all times.
• Be Early!  To be on time is to be late.
• Absolutely no gum in the band hall, in the stands or on the field.
• Have pride in everything that you do as a member of the band.
• Remember that you are always a representative of your band, school and community, so behave accordingly.
• Absolutely no cell phones on or visible during rehearsals and performances (this includes in the stands).
• Do not talk unless permitted during rehearsals and performances.
• Follow and uphold all rules and guidelines set by Sudan ISD.
• If it does not belong to you, do not touch it!  This includes but is not limited to other people’s instruments.

Marching Band Rules

• No talking on the field unless instructed by a director.
• Always raise your hand when addressed by a director in rehearsal.
• Do not leave the stands unless permitted by a director.
• Remain in your assigned seating position when in the stands.
• No food, drink, candy or gum in the stands (except water).
• Do not play your instrument unless instructed to.
• Be ready to perform at a moments notice.
• All school and band rules apply at all times!

Uniforms, Equipment and Instruments

       All school property needs to be treated with the utmost pride and respect.  Students will be held responsible for any damage outside normal wear and tear.

       Uniforms need to be folded neatly and returned to the uniform bag when they are not being worn.  Uniforms are also to be worn properly at ALL TIMES.

       Instruments should be properly stowed in their cases when they are not being used.  DO NOT leave any instruments lying around unattended.

Travelling Guidelines

• Stay on the bus you are signed up on!  No switching without the permission of the director.
• Remain seated as much as possible while the bus is moving.
• Keep your voices down!
• Clean up after yourself.
• Any movie shown on the bus needs to be pre-approved by a director.
• Respect all chaperones and adults at all times.
• No drugs, tobacco or alcohol.
• No boys in girl’s rooms and vice versa, ever!
• All school and band rules apply at all times!

Infractions

Any minor infraction, which includes but is not limited to a violation of any rule,  will be dealt with through the following procedure:

1st Offense – Verbal Warning and Conference with Director.

2nd Offense – 1 Hour Detention and Parental Notification.

3rd Offense – Parent, Director and Administrator Conference.

Offenses will also affect the daily participation grade. All offenses will be logged with the directors and consulted on a regular basis!

Grading Policy

60% of the student’s total grade in band will be based on participation.  This includes attendance, practice assignments, behavior, bringing materials to class and overall demeanor during rehearsal.  Each student will receive weekly participation grades.

40% of the student’s total grade in band will be based on tests.  This includes all performances, memory assignments, playing tests and any other assignment presented by the directors.

Alternate assignments will be given for excused absences from performances.

Absences

       In order for an absence from any event to be excused through the band department, the following procedure must take place:

• Unless it’s an emergency, the directors must be notified by phone, note or email in advance.
• A written explanation (i.e. Doctor’s note) must be presented immediately following the absence.

Any for seen absence from a performance and/or rehearsal must be submitted to the directors at least one month in advance so proper arrangements can be made.

Aug. 6th             Band Camp!!!  5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  For Everyone!!  Drum Majors and Section Leaders report at 4:00 p.m.

Aug. 6th-23rd     Band Camp!!!  Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Aug. 23rd          Band Camp!!! 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Performance for parents at 7:00 p.m.  followed by a parent meeting in the band hall.

Student Permission and Medical Release Forms

I give my permission for__________________________ to attend all band activities for the 2007-2008 school year.  I understand that my child must follow all discipline guidelines stated in the Sudan Student Handbook as well as the Band Handbook.  I understand that failure to do so may result in the removal of my child from the activity and his/her return home at my expense.  I also give Sudan ISD authorization to seek medical treatment for my child if necessary.
